[-empyre-] listening to music

i think it would be interesting to hear what others members of this panel
and list enjoy listening to and why. do you listen to relax? do you listen
intently (analysing what you are hearing), or do you listen as background?
do you listen to music/sound that makes you feel good, or that shares
something in the way you think (i.e. lyrics that you identify with).

The majority of my music listening is done here at work, and I tend to favor either background music or non-harsh pop music. So, right now it's Yo La Tengo, Sigur Ros, Nick Cave, Cat Power, Magnetic Fields, Nick Drake, Mojave 3, Mark Kozelek, etc. Instrumental post-rock like Loren Connors, Lanterna, Set Fire to Flames, Pan American, Brokeback. A lot of dub--King Tubby, Prince Far-I, Augustus Pablo, etc. Electronic stuff like Dan Abrams, Jan Jelinek, Lilienthal, Monolake.

Basically music that isn't too loud, abrasive, high/low frequencies, or stuff that won't embarrass me too much when someone walks into my office.

Now, when I'm painting, or cleaning house, or driving, then, all bets are off--an opportunity to listen to everything else. Although when drawing, often I work in silence, allowing the sounds from the outside world to do their thing . . .

Anyways. Lots of other threads I want to reply to, so hopefully later today or this evening . . .

G.
